The Man I Built to Survive

A Memoir of Survival, Silence, and Accountability

What happens when the man you built to survive becomes the man you must learn to understand? This memoir reflects on survival, silence, and accountability—on what shaped a life, and the responsibility of facing it honestly.

The First Blueprint

Before he understood what manhood meant, a five-year-old boy was handed its responsibilities.

“I did not become emotionally silent in one instant. No child is transformed by a single sentence that neatly. The lesson settled into other lessons, other examples, and other experiences that came later. But this was one of the first times manhood was spoken to me as an obligation. It arrived beside my father’s casket, at the exact moment I most needed permission to remain a child.”

— Chapter 1: The Man of the House.

The Armor Works

Protection can offer safety and belonging—but what does it cost?

“The problem with borrowed power is that it can make you slow to question the person lending it to you. If his presence makes your life easier, you have an incentive to explain away things you might judge more harshly in somebody else. You can tell yourself loyalty means accepting flaws. You can convince yourself a person’s bad decisions are separate from what he gives you.”

— Chapter 5: Protection at a Price.

The Cost

Success can hide the patterns closest to us.

“For a long time, I acted as if each relationship had a different answer because each woman was different. Looking back, I can see the harder truth. The women were different. The pattern was mine.”

— Chapter 10: Same Pattern, Different Woman.

The Rebuild

Understanding the past is one step. Owning adult choices asks for something more.

“Accountability did not begin for me with an apology. That would make a cleaner story. It would be easier to say that once I understood what I had done, I found the people I had hurt, said the right words, and began repairing the damage. That would give this part of my life a satisfying scene. It would also give me credit I did not earn that neatly. What happened was slower.”

— Chapter 14: Accountability Is the Turning Point.

Read an Excerpt

“For a long time, I thought the fact that my life kept moving was proof that I was doing something right.

I worked. I solved problems. I learned how to take a hit and keep going. I became independent, built a career, and made myself useful when something needed to be fixed. From the outside, those qualities looked like strength. From the inside, they felt like strength too.

What I did not understand was that a man can be highly functional and still be governed by rules he has never examined.

Some of the rules I carried helped me survive and succeed. They made me disciplined, persistent, and difficult to knock down. The same rules could also make me quiet when I needed to speak, controlling when I needed to listen, defensive when I needed to consider another point of view, and independent in ways that kept other people at a distance.

The difficult truth was not that everything I considered a strength was secretly a weakness. It was that I had never learned to ask when a strength had stopped serving the situation in front of me.

Survival does not always know when the emergency is over.”
